Humans of CI is built on trust. People send us their stories, their photographs and sometimes their children’s names. This page explains what we collect, why we collect it and what you can ask us to do with it.

  • We only collect what you choose to send us, through the story form or by email.
  • Nothing is published without a phone call and your consent first.
  • We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
  • Gifts are paid by UPI to Sankalp Trust Foundation. We never see your bank details.
  • You can ask us to correct or delete your information at any time.

Who we are

Humans of CI (humansofci.com) is a storytelling and fundraising project about cochlear implants, started by Navya Mrig in New Delhi and run with Sankalp Trust Foundation. In this policy, “we” means the Humans of CI team.

For anything to do with your information, write to navyaamrig@gmail.com. That address is also our grievance contact under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

What we collect

When you share a story

The “Add your story to the map” form asks for your name, age, city, country, your relation to the person with the implant, your story, your email address and your phone number. You can also add up to three photographs. When you tick the consent box, we record the consent sentence you agreed to with your entry.

When you give

Gifts are paid by scanning Sankalp Trust Foundation’s UPI code in your own payment app. The payment happens between you, your bank and the trust. We do not receive your card, account or UPI details. If you email us a payment screenshot for a receipt, we keep that email.

When you email us

We keep the emails you send and the details in them, so that we can reply.

When you visit

Like every website, our host records basic technical details of each visit, such as your IP address, browser and the pages requested. We do not run analytics on top of this.

How we use it

  • To read your story and call you to check the details and your consent before anything is published.
  • To publish the story and photographs you agreed to share, on this website.
  • To match a gift to the child it was meant for, and to arrange your receipt with Sankalp Trust Foundation.
  • To reply when you write to us.
  • To keep the website secure and working.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Stories about children

Many of our stories are about children. A story or photograph of anyone under 18 can only be sent by their parent or guardian, and the consent box on the form says so. Before we publish, we confirm that consent with you by phone.

Children waiting for help are shown with a reference number, such as HCI-0501, and never by name. Their photographs appear only with their family’s consent.

Who we share it with

  • Sankalp Trust Foundation, which receives every gift and funds the children’s care. We share what is needed to match a gift to a child and issue a receipt.
  • Our website host, which stores the website and the form entries.
  • Google, because our email is a Gmail account, so story notifications and your emails are held there. Google Fonts also supplies the typefaces on this page, which means your browser asks Google’s servers for them.
  • Unsplash, which serves a few stock photographs on the home page from its own servers.
  • Anyone, once a story is published. A published story and its photographs can be seen by every visitor. Only what you agreed to on the phone is published.

We will also share information if the law requires it.

How long we keep it

  • A published story stays on the website until you ask us to take it down.
  • A story we do not publish is deleted within 12 months of being sent.
  • Emails about gifts are kept for as long as Sankalp Trust Foundation needs them for receipts and its legal records.
  • Other emails are kept for as long as the conversation needs them.

Cookies

We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. WordPress sets cookies only for the people who log in to manage the site. If this ever changes, we will update this page first.

Your rights

Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what information we hold about you and how we use it
  • correct it, or bring it up to date
  • delete it, including taking a published story down
  • stop using it, by withdrawing your consent

Write to navyaamrig@gmail.com and we will reply within 30 days. Withdrawing consent does not undo what was lawfully done before, but we will remove a published story as soon as we can. If you are not satisfied with our reply, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

Keeping it safe

The website runs over HTTPS, form entries are kept in the website’s password-protected admin area, and only the Humans of CI team can read them. No system is perfectly secure, so please do not send us anything you would not want to share, such as medical reports or ID documents.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we use information, we will update this page and the date at the top. For a change that affects stories already sent, we will contact the people who sent them.

Questions, corrections or removals

Write to us and a person will reply, usually within a few days.
